Why should I use handpan oil to care for my handpan?

Every handpan, no matter what material it is made of, needs to be well cared for. Steel always reacts with air, moisture, salts and acids, which can lead to discoloration, corrosion and rusting. Regular and proper cleaning of your handpan is therefore definitely recommended.

Applying a special care oil for handpans creates a patina that protects your instrument from the effects of salt, acids and moisture. This prevents rusting and discoloration of the material and ensures that the original surface appearance of your instrument is preserved for a long time.

Phoenix handpan oil for the care of nitrated handpans:

Handpans made of nitrided steel , like stainless steel handpans, require regular renewal of the protective layer on the surface to prevent rusting and surface discoloration. In addition, regular handpan care ensures a lasting shine and preservation of the original look of your instrument. Give your instrument new life and avoid rust.

Since Phoenix Handpan Oil is composed of vegetable oils, we only recommend it for the care of nitrated handpans . Plant-based oils are acidic and can discolour stainless steel surfaces. Therefore use our stainless steel handpan oil to clean and care for handpans made of stainless steel - this includes Embersteel.

Instructions for handpan cleaning & care with handpan oil in seven steps:

  1. Wash your hands before every game. In this way you reduce the involuntary application of harmful substances such as salts and acids to your handpan.
  2. Remove dirt, grease, salts and acids from your handpan every 1-2 weeks with a high-percentage rubbing alcohol.
  3. After cleaning, apply enough care oil to the clean and dry surface of your handpan and spread it evenly with a microfiber cloth so that the entire handpan is covered with a shiny layer of oil.
  4. To remove stains, tarnishing and fingerprints, polish with a microfiber cloth.
  5. After oiling, let your handpan rest for about 12 hours so that the oil can adhere and a protective patina develops.
  6. If the handpan is still greasy after it has taken effect, simply remove the residue with a microfibre cloth.
  7. After each game, wipe with the still oily microfiber cloth to lightly oil the surface and remove salts and acids from your skin.

Questions & answers when buying a handpan:

Our handpans are elaborately crafted by hand. Even though our handpans are made with the utmost care and craftsmanship, natural differences in color, slight variations in design and minimal manufacturing marks, such as fine scratches or unevenness on the tone fields and the sound body, may occur.

Visible hammer marks, which are caused by the precise tuning of the instrument by hand, are characteristic features of handmade handpans. They are evidence of authentic craftsmanship and do not represent a quality defect. On the contrary, they emphasize the uniqueness of each instrument.
